Cora Rebecca Kirkeby

Cora R. Kirkeby, age 106, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday morning, May 16, 2009 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA following a short illness. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah by Rev. Douglas L. Mathison with burial in Pontoppidan Cemetery Visitation will be on Wednesday, one hour before the service at the church. Cora Rebecca Kirkeby was born February 18, 1903, at home in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Nils and Emma (Nilselokken) Evenrud. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at Glenwood Lutheran Church. She attended rural Lee School and was a 1922 graduate of Decorah High School. Cora taught in rural schools (including Lee School) until her marriage to Theodore E. Kirkeby on July 8, 1926. To this union one daughter, Virginia Ann, was born. Cora and Theodore farmed in Union Prairie Township, Alamakee County, Iowa, until their retirement in 1980, when they moved to Decorah, Iowa. Cora was a lifetime member of Glenwood Lutheran Church and had been active in Friendship Circle and Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, quilting, and embroidery work. Cora moved to the Aase Haugen Home in July, 1997, where she was a resident until the time of her death on Saturday morning, May 16, 2009, at the age of 106. Preceding her in death were her parents, Nils and Emma Evenrud; her husband, Theodore on January 31, 1982; two sisters: Lillian Rovang and Evelyn Kvamme; one foster brother, Clifford Westby; and by her son-in-law, Roger Holder. Cora is survived by her daughter, Virginia Holder of Waterloo, Iowa; one granddaughter, Melinda (David) Meyne and two great-grandsons: Seth and Sam Meyne all of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
