Cheryl Bergan, age 74, of Decorah, IA, died on Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 10, 2014, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Road, rural Decorah, IA, with Rev. Mark Kvale presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 p.m., on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also on Monday after 10:00 a.m., at the church. The casket will be closed, per Cheryl’s request. Cheryl Ann (Ellingson) Bergan was born on December 15, 1939,, the daughter of Harris and Henrietta (Hendrickson) Ellingson, north of Decorah, Iowa. Cheryl was baptized and confirmed at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. She attended Pleasant Township #7 School and graduated from Decorah High School in 1958. When growing up, Cheryl enjoyed riding horses. After high school, Cheryl worked in St. Paul, Minnesota at a bank from 1959-63. She was united in marriage to Duane Bergan on March 9, 1963, at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. Cheryl was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bridge, cards, reading, bowling, watching TV; especially the Price is Right and As the World Turns. She was always a good cook, but was always willing to go out to eat. Cheryl enjoyed watching the UNI marching band at football games. She also loved attending family events, especially ones that included watching her grandchildren. Cheryl was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, where she helped teach Sunday School and also audit the church books. Cheryl is survived by her two children: Debbie (Bruce) Cook, Ventura, IA, and Marc (Kim) Bergan, Baldwin City, KS. Four grandchildren: David & Bryant Cook and Sydney & Avery Bergan. One sister: Sandra Pierce, Sacramento, CA. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Lorena Ellingson, Decorah, IA; Mary Ellingson, Decorah, IA; Calvin Snitker, Waukon, IA; Edward Shelby, Summerton, NC; Daryl (Donna) Bergan, Decorah, IA; Elaine (Jerry) Gipp, Decorah, IA; Linda (Stuart) Collins, Burnsville, MN; Donna Gavle, Decorah, IA; and Norvin Anderson, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents: Harris and Henrietta (Hendrickson) Ellingson. Her husband: Duane Bergan on July 30, 2011. One granddaughter: Alexandra Bergan on Dec. 5, 2008. Her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Orval & Adeline (Haugen) Bergan. Brothers and sisters: Tilman Ellingson, Mervin Ellingson, Orval Ellingson, Adelaide Shelby and Esther (Willard) Grotegut. Brother-in-law: Darrell Pierce and sisters-in-law: Diane Anderson and Kathleen Snitker.
