Catherine "Kay" Rosenthal

Catherine “Kay” Rosenthal, age 90, of Decorah, IA, died on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at the Winneshiek Medical Center, in Decorah, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2012, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, in Decorah, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN, on Monday, February 13, 2012, at 12:00 Noon. Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday and also from 9:00-10:00 a.m., on Saturday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given in memory of Kay to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 307 West Main St., Decorah, IA 52101, or to the charity of your choice. Catherine Julia “Kay” (Broihier) Rosenthal was born on April 21, 1921, the daughter of Eugene Conrad and Josephine (Rothmeyer) Broihier in Calmar, IA. Kay attended and graduated from Calmar High School, where she enjoyed playing three on three girls basketball. She was united in marriage to Frederick Johnson Rosenthal on July 17, 1943 at Ft. McClellan, near Brownsville, TX. Kay worked at the Winneshiek County Court House as a stenographer. In 1953, they started Frederick’s Restaurant, in downtown Decorah, which they owned and operated until they sold it in 1986. Kay enjoyed traveling, fishing with her family, playing cards, going to the Boat, tending to her flower gardens, feeding the birds and helping children read at St. Benedict’s Catholic School. She especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Kay was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, St. Mark’s Ladies Circle, the Catholic Daughters of America and the VFW and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Kay is survived by her four children: Connie (Paul Lanphier) Maslow, Denver, CO; Fred (Karin) Rosenthal, Clermont, FL; Jo (Jim) Bowes, Waterloo, IA; and Mary Rosenthal (Mick Morin), Nashville, TN. Nine grandchildren: Sean (Paige) Maslow, Seth (Denise) Rosenthal, Shannon (Dave) Luedke, Nathan (Alicia) Rosenthal, Kristy (Nate) Riordan, Amy Bowes, Aaron (Jessica) Maslow, Ryan (fiance, Liz) Maslow and Alex Bowes, along with twelve great grandchildren. One sister-in-law: Dorothy Rosenthal, Decorah, IA. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents: Eugene Conrad and Josephine (Rothmeyer) Broihier. Her husband: Frederick Rosenthal on Feb. 15, 1990. One son: Mark Rosenthal on Nov. 5, 1957.One Sister: Vi (Ed) Rosecky. Three brothers: Eugene (Laura), Marce (Gen) and Francis “Bud” (Adeline) Broihier.
