Carsten Willard Ingvoldstad

Carsten W. Ingvoldstad, age 100, of Decorah, Iowa, died Monday morning, January 17, 2005 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, following a long illness. Funeral Service is on Friday, January 21, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at Decorah Lutheran Church by the Rev. James Glesne and Rev. Bryan Robertson, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. Visitation is on Friday, January 21, 2005 at Decorah Lutheran Church from 10:00-11:00 A.M. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of the arrangements. Carsten Willard Ingvoldstad was born July 30, 1904 at 816 River Street in Decorah, Iowa, the son of William Bernhart and Sophie (Larsen) Ingvoldstad. He graduated from Luther Prep High School in Decorah with the Class of 1922. Carsten earned a Bachelor Degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield Minnesota in 1926. While in college, Carsten played football and was a member of the 1925 conference champion St. Olaf football team. He was the proud claimant of a school record for the longest loss of “quarterback sack yardage”, and though unsubstantiated he believed that the record still stands. He was united in marriage to Beth Maxine McClannahan on June 1, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois by his uncle, Rev. Orlando Ingvoldstad. To this union, four children were born: Carsten II, Mary, Patrick and Roger. From 1937-1953 Carsten sold real estate for his father in Long Lake, Illinois where his father owned the local lumber yard. They also brought young Norwegian carpenters from Decorah to build houses. He and his family returned to Decorah in 1953 and Carsten joined his family in the Ingvoldstad Lumber Company. He served as Treasurer of the company until 1960. He also owned and operated several apartment buildings in town and a number of farms in the area. In 1965 Carsten was able to purchase the home in Decorah where he was born, and he lived there until moving into the Barthell Eastern Star Home in 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Beth on February 9, 1992; his two brothers, Robert and Lester Ingvoldstad and a great grandson, Kjell Austin Ingvoldstad. He is survived by his four children, Carsten II (Connie) Ingvoldstad of White Bear Lake, MN., Mary (Gilbert) Walton of Richland Center, WI., Patrick Ingvoldstad of Waldorf, MD.. and Roger (Karen) Ingvoldstad of Aloha, OR.; ten grandchildren, Cynthia (Eric) LaBat, Carsten III (Kimberly Wilburn) Ingvoldstad, Curtis (Desiree Fintel) Ingvoldstad, Jeffrey Walton, Edward Walton, Stacey (Michael) Lee, Danielle Ingvoldstad, Margaret (Scott) Campbell, Kristin (Joshua) De Graff and Nathan (Megan) Ingvoldstad; ten great-grandchildren, Anthony, Celina and Devon LaBat; Maya and Carsten IV, Alexander, Isaac, Rebecca and Nathaniel Ingvoldstad; and Hudson Campbell and by family friend, Kris Meyer of Postville, IA.
