Carol Sue Engbretson, age 62, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI, following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2009, at the Madison Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Phil and Ginny Olson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Schluter – Balik Home in Decorah and after 1:00 p.m. at the church on Sunday afternoon. Carol Sue Engbretson was born on July 12, 1946, the daughter of Irvin and Marjorie (Houston) Engbretson in Decorah, Iowa. Sue was baptized on July 26, 1946 and confirmed in May of 1959 at the Madison Lutheran Church. Sue graduated from Decorah High School in 1964. She was a receptionist for the Winneshiek Development Center (Spectrum Network) for many years and then served as a client. Sue also participated in the Adult Day Service program, which she really enjoyed. Sue entered the Aase Haugen Nursing Home three years ago and enjoyed visiting and playing cards with her friends. Sue enjoyed country and western music. She also enjoyed making several trips to see relatives in Arkansas, trips to the Lake up North and going to Branson, MO. Sue was a member of the Madison Lutheran Church and had a strong faith that sustained her throughout her life. Sue is survived by many cousins and a host of faithful friends. Sue was preceded in death by her mother: Marjorie Engbretson on June 25, 2001 and her father: Irvin Engbretson on April 9, 2003. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and her friends at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home, Gundersen Hospital and the Winneshiek Medical Center for her loving care and friendships over the last few years.
