Bruce Meyer

  Bruce L. Meyer, age 70, of Decorah, IA, died on Friday, November 25, 2016, at Aase Haugen Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, 1725 Washington Prairie Road, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Jenny Edinger presiding. Friends may call after 12:00 Noon on Tuesday at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is handling the arrangements.Bruce Lloyd Meyer was born on October 11, 1946, in Postville, IA, the first born of five children to Lloyd and Maxine (Hunsberger) Meyer. Bruce was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. While in school he had a paper route, and later worked at Impact Milling and for Hy-Grade. Bruce graduated from Postville High School in 1966. On June 5, 1966, he was united in marriage to Lynne Allen at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Bruce worked for Peter Johnson and Son, Voltmer Electric/Casper Plumbing, and then with Casper Plumbing until he retired in 2008. Bruce was a volunteer fireman with the Decorah Fire Department from January 1978 – October 2002. He served as a training officer, 2nd Assistant Chief, 1st Assistant Chief and then as Chief. Bruce was an avid sportsman and loved spending his time with his family tent camping and at the “Ten” (their cabin in Allamakee County). Bruce was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, where he served as a trustee and spent a lot of time remodeling the parsonage. Bruce and Lynne recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family. Bruce is survived by his wife: Lynne Meyer, Decorah, IA. Three children: Tami (Andy) Claybaugh, Shoreview, MN; Dawn (Travis) Hughes, Luana, IA; and Benjamin (Emily) Meyer, Oelwein, IA. Five grandchildren: Kyle & Allison Claybaugh, MacKenzie Hughes, Mason & Raina Meyer. Four siblings: Burton (Kim) Meyer, Marshfield, WI; Beverly (Jerry) Loftsgaard, Gunder, IA; Russell (Mary Jo) Meyer, Waukon, IA; and Roger (Sue) Meyer, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Randall Allen, Decorah, IA, and sister-in-law: Dianne Allen, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents: Lloyd and Maxine (Hunsberger) Meyer. An infant stillborn daughter: Susie Rae. His father-in-law and mother-in-law: Robert and Opal Allen. Two sisters-in-law: Cheryl Allen and Penny Allen.
