Barbara Hinz

Barbara Hinz, age 99, formerly of Decorah, IA, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the Solon Care Center in Solon, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2022, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, IA, with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday morning. In Lieu of flowers: memorials may be made to the Solon Care Center, 523 East 5th St., Solon, IA 52333 Barbara was born on November 6, 1922, to George and Myrlie Baker in Decorah, Iowa. She married Darwin “Sid” Hinz on January 21, 1947. Barbara attended Luther College, Carlton College, and the University of Iowa where she was a cheerleader. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1945 with a degree in English. Barbara initiated the Northeast Iowa Community Action program in Winneshiek and surrounding counties. She enjoyed golfing, bridge and belonged to Oneota Golf course for many years. She moved to Arizona in 1986 and back to Decorah in 1998. Barbara moved to Iowa City in 2010, where she enjoyed her grandchildren, eating out and spending time with family and the family dogs. Barbara is survived by her children: Cathy Jo Berg and Jaime (Doug) Sherman; Grandchildren: Richard (Jessica) Blauer, Jory (Mea) Blauer, Stephanie (Christopher) Fitzgerald, Christopher (Rachel) Berg, Courtney Berg, Kyle Sherman, Casey (Jordan) Sherman Kallas. Great-grandchildren: Xander and Skyler Blauer, Andrew and Matthew Blauer, Breken and Baylor Fitzgerald, Nolan Berg, Liam and Sophia Sherman, Avery, Cameron and Rory Kallas. Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Darwin “Sid” Hinz; Daughter, Cynthia Blauer; Son-in-law, John Blauer; Parents, George and Myrlie Baker; Stepmother, Ann Baker.
