August “Blackie” Holthaus, age 85, of Ossian, Iowa died on Thursday, May 5, 2005 at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa following a lengthy illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 9, 2005 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa with Monsignor Cletus Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar and on Monday morning until 10:00 a.m. There will a rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a scripture service at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Survivors: Daughter: Betty Larson, West Union, IA Two sons: Clifford Holthaus, Decorah, IA and August “Junior” Holthaus, Clermont, IA. Two daughter-in-laws: Vernelle Holthaus, Hawkeye, IA and Bernice Holthaus, West Union, IA. Two brothers: Ralph Holthaus, Ossian, IA and Francis “Fritz” Holthaus, Calmar, IA. Three sisters: Agnes Riha & Lillian Holthaus both of Decorah, IA and Caroline Schildmeyer, Ossian, IA.
