Arne Hoyland

May 6, 1955 — August 27, 2025

Arne Hoyland, age 70, of Decorah, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Gundersen Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

A Celebration of Life will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Helms Funeral Homes, 306 E. Water Street, Decorah, Iowa.

Arne O Hoyland was born on May 6th, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois to Aase W. Hoyland (Rees-Kjulsrud) and Olaf A Hoyland.

Arne’s mother and two younger sisters spent several years living in Chicago before relocating to Norway for a brief time, eventually returning to the United States. From a young age, Arne embraced a spirit of adventure. He had a passion for riding motorcycles, collecting classic cars, scuba diving, and proudly earned his pilot’s license

At just 17 years old, Arne became the owner of Hoyl Industries, where he devoted many years to the manufacturing of high-quality locks for medical and commercial cabinetry. It was in Chicago in 1989 that Arne met Maria G. Cervantes, who had joined the company as an employee. Their professional relationship quickly grew into a personal bond, and they were married on June 12, 1993, in Chicago.

Soon after their marriage, they welcomed their first child, Arne S Hoyland. Following Arne’s birth, they relocated to Decorah, IA in 1996 and bought a retired farm in the country. They welcomed three daughters: Samantha, Sonja, and Grace.

Arne enjoyed living in the country, when he was not working at his business, or driving the kids to and from school/sports, he found joy in mowing the lawn, telling jokes and stories, tinkering with his tractor, and working on projects around their home.

He retired in 2015 and spent his later years at home with his wife and son, enjoying the peace of family life. He cherished every moment spent with his children, their spouses, and especially his granddaughter. Nothing brought him more joy than having everyone together under one roof — a full, lively home filled with laughter, noise, and love.

Arne’s greatest joy in life was his beloved wife of 32 years, Maria, his children, and granddaughter. He enjoyed sweet treats, and loved a hot cup of coffee while watching old westerns.

He is survived by his wife, Maria, and their four children; Arne Hoyland of Decorah; Samantha (Hunter) Spilde of Waukon; Sonja (Mike) Rogers of Decorah; Grace Hoyland of Iowa city; his granddaughter Myla Spilde; and his two sisters. Chris A Hoyland, of Cebu, Philippines, and Karen (Eugene) Scearce, of Granton, WI.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Aase W Hoyland Falk.

Arne will be remembered not only for the life he lived but for the love he gave so freely. His memory will remain a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
