Alvin attended St. Luke Catholic School. After Alvin’s father died Alvin stayed home to farm. Alvin was united in marriage to Lila Johansen on June 1, 1960 at the Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, IA. Alvin was always busy working at the White House as a bartender, janitor at the bank for many years, butter maker at the creamery and finally his job at Calmar Manufacturing. Alvin, a soft spoken and mild-mannered gentleman, was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, trapping and hunting ginseng and mushrooms. Raccoon hunting with the family and family fishing trips to Minnesota are remembered with fondness and laughter. Alvin was an avid Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Alvin and Lila attended Cubs games each season with his niece, Carol Ann Langreck. Alvin enjoyed his cats, Cookie, Tommy and Howard, and his dog Bob. Alvin raised dozens of families of white and mallard ducks. Duck families who've reached fame with the St Lucas Centennial and they’re being added to the centennial T-shirts. Alvin had collected an impressive Salt and Pepper shaker collection numbering in the thousands. Yet shakers on the kitchen table were humorously rare. Alvin was a coin collector and had many stories about his unique collection.Alvin's last moments were calm and comfortable having dozed off sitting on the couch with a can of Cookie the cats favorite cat food warming up in his pocket, a candy sucker upon his tongue and the days lottery tickets at hand, and possibly..hopefully..to be awakened by Lila's soft voice and tender hand upon his cheek...."Lets head home Alvin"..
