Alan Sensor, age 68, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, August 29, 2011, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2011 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, IA with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding, burial will be in the St. Benedict’s Cemetery in Decorah, IA. Visitation will be 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2011 at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA. and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday. There will also be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:00 Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be given in memory of Alan to St. Benedict’s Catholic School, 402 E. Rural Avenue, Decorah, IA, 52101 or to St. Aloysius Catholic School, 300 S. Maryville, Calmar, IA 52132. Alan Richard Sensor was born on October 18, 1942, the son of Richard and Amanda (Thomann) Sensor in Decorah, IA. Alan attended grade school in rural Winneshiek County School and at St. Benedict’s Catholic School. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1960. While in school, Alan started to play the piano and organ, which he did all of his life; playing for many weddings and funerals throughout northeast Iowa. In his younger years, Alan helped his father, Richard, to grind feed with Sensor Milling. Alan also owned and operated restaurants and furniture stores in Decorah, Ridgway, Calmar, Ossian and Mabel, MN. In 1980, he was co-founder of the Sensor-French-Anderson Funeral Home in Decorah. Alan was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, The Elks Lodge #443, all in Decorah and the Ossian Crown Club in Ossian. Alan is survived by his sister: Diane and her husband, Jerry Homewood, of Waterloo, IA. One aunt: Ethel Sensor, Decorah, IA, along with many cousins. Alan was preceded in death by his parents: Richard Sensor on October 18, 1971 and Amanda Sensor on March 31, 2004. His grandparents: Cecil & Emma Sensor and Alf & Adena Thomann.
